Top Free Things to Do in London
If you fancy getting away for a weekend, or even longer, the British winter is the best time head to one of the big cities and take a city break (if you can’t afford to head off to enjoy some foreign sunshine or skiing). London, in particular, has a reputation for being expensive, and whilst that can be true when it comes to the transport, it doesn’t have to be when it comes to accommodation or things to do (so much is free!).
So, as there are literally hundreds of things to choose from, we’ve opted for categories rather than individual activities, to tick as many boxes as possible.
Museums
Nearly all of London’s museums are absolutely free. If you’ve managed to find a room in one of the many hotels in Kensington (Check out Millennium for a good selection), you’ll be right on the doorstep of two of the best: the Natural History Museum, and the Science Museum. Throw in the British Museum, and then smaller, quirkier places like the Soanes Museum and you’ve got enough to satisfy any culture vulture without ever spending a penny.
Art Galleries
On a similar theme, London has loads of great art galleries which are absolutely free. The most popular of all is the Tate Modern (pictured below, it’s also the most popular tourist destination in London), but there’s also the Portrait Gallery and the Tate Britain to name just a couple of big ones.
Parks and Gardens
For one of the world’s major cities, London is a remarkably green place. Hyde Park is probably the most famous, but there’s also Regent’s Park (which plays host to London Zoo), Green Park, St James’ Park, and then the Rose Gardens and the Kensington Palace Gardens. There’s usually stuff to do in each of the parks (especially in summer), but they’re great all year round, and a nice place to stretch your legs.
Street Performers
Continuing the theme of getting out and about, London has some of the best street performers in the world and they pop up all over the place. Two popular spots are the South Bank and Covent Garden, where every performer has to pass an audition and a license before they get their spot.
Street Markets
London has fantastic street markets, Camden, Portobello Road, Brixton, Brick Lane, Petticoat Lane and Greenwich are just a few of the famous ones, and they’re a great way to pass a few hours (and pick up a few bargains).
Finally, if you’re looking for a really unique experience, have a scour round the internet for some of the free recitals, theatre productions and exhibitions that are to be found all over the capital. You’ll be amazed at some of the things you can see and do without even spending a penny!
